What Is It?
The single piece each of seven chiefs wears: the Old Mailbag comes from the Waylayer at the Upturned Post Hut, the Rainhush Earmuffs from the Rain Listener in the Rainlisten Grotto, the Mossgauze Mask from the Gnat Piper at Frogsong Pool and the Mirrorgrain Plate from the Mirror Guest at Mirrorwater Temple; the Galebreaker Mantle, Galebreaker Pack and Galebreaker Hood make up the Galebreaker set and come from the Galebreaker Ranger (Chaser), (Stalker) and (Warden) holding the three return relay platforms. Worn, they give the game's usual pack capacity, hearing, head armour or body armour; on the isles each also has a use: an extra pigeon letter, longer chief warnings, gnats that stop dodging, reconciling with Zheling without the old letter or route chart, and any two Galebreaker pieces make you quicker on bridges. The Overlook Stargazer's lens helm is under "Starworks Gear".

How to Get It
- The Waylayer (chief, Upturned Post Hut): drops the Old Mailbag 30% of the time, nothing the other 70%.
- Rain Listener (chief, Rainlisten Grotto): drops the Rainhush Earmuffs 30% of the time, nothing the other 70%.
- Gnat Piper (chief, Frogsong Pool, night only): drops the Mossgauze Mask 30% of the time, nothing the other 70%.
- Mirror Guest (chief, Mirrorwater Temple, night only): drops the Mirrorgrain Plate 30% of the time, nothing the other 70%.
- Galebreaker Ranger (Chaser / Stalker / Warden) (chiefs, the three return relay platforms: K1 Hanging Root Wood, K2 Fallen Star Workshop, K3 Windsong Boardwalk): the Chaser wears the Galebreaker Mantle, the Stalker carries the Galebreaker Pack and the Warden wears the Galebreaker Hood; each leaves its own piece behind 40% of the time, nothing the other 60%. Completing the set means beating all three.
- Jeff's prelude (Ground Zero): the Galebreaker Warden guarding the lost navigation instrument uses the same profile and has a 40% chance to drop the Galebreaker Hood.
- "Night" means 22:00 to 06:00 game time: by day you will only find followers at Frogsong Pool and Mirrorwater Temple, and the chief only comes out when you approach at night.
- The piece that drops comes at full durability.
- Never in any random pool (island crates, Wish Fountain, daily sign-in, boss loot crates). These chiefs are the only source.
Uses on the Isles
Old Mailbag (in the backpack slot):
- Carry it on the isles and, as long as there are letters you have not received, the pigeons bring one extra letter that raid (once per raid).
Rainhush Earmuffs (in the headset slot):
- Every chief's and island lord's warnings (rings on the ground, lunge lines, a tripwire pulling taut, the flute being played) stay lit longer: 1.25 times as long.
- The Rain Listener needs 16 of your shots at the cave mouth to bring rocks down (8 without them).
Mossgauze Mask (in the face-mask slot):
- The cloud gnats around you cannot tell you are aiming at them and stop dodging your shots.
Mirrorgrain Plate (in the armor slot):
- Wear it to see Zheling. He knows the pattern: you can reconcile without the old letter or the route chart. Only what you are wearing when you see him counts.
Galebreaker pair (any two of the Galebreaker Hood / Galebreaker Mantle / Galebreaker Pack worn at once):
- You walk and run 12% faster while standing on bridges and relay platforms; the bonus comes off as soon as you step off.
Tips
The Waylayer:
- When you are within 2.5 m and carrying island consumables, a ring lights at its feet and it reaches for 0.8 seconds; if you are still within 2.9 m when the ring finishes, it snatches your most valuable island consumable (bento, salve, lantern, incense, charm, veil, gnat zapper or fan; one from the stack; keepsakes, materials and the game's own items are left alone). Then it flicks to the far end of the hut and runs 30% faster for 6 seconds.
- Back off while the ring is lit and it grabs nothing. It snatches at most twice per fight.
- If it does snatch something, run it down: your things are on its body and land in its loot box when it falls.
- Below 40% health it drops what it took at its feet and stops snatching.
Rain Listener:
- It counts the shots you fire around the cave mouth (within 26 m of the cave rock), one per trigger pull (a shotgun blast counts once), and every 8 shots it brings 2 rocks down beside you (2.4 m radius, about 1.4 seconds of warning).
- Fire less at the mouth, switch to melee, or draw it out of the cave first, and the count stops rising.
- Once its Rainhush Earmuffs are crit through it can no longer hear your gunfire or bring rocks down.
Gnat Piper:
- When you come within 30 m it stands still and plays its flute for 1 second with a ring at its feet (the ring does no damage); then it calls cloud gnats to you, and for 8 seconds every gnat on the map comes at you, gnat zappers or not. It plays about every 9 seconds.
- Deal 8 damage to it during that second and the tune breaks off.
- Once its Mossgauze Mask is crit through it can no longer play.
Mirror Guest:
- While you are near the mirror pool (within 45 m), about every 8 seconds it lights a ring (1.8 m radius) behind you, at its own position mirrored across you, flips there 1.1 seconds later and slams down, leaving a translucent reflection where it stood (20 health, fades after 6 seconds).
- Turn and step out as soon as a ring lights at your back. Shatter the reflection first and it reels for 3 seconds, and does not flip while it reels.
- Move more than 45 m from the pool and it stops flipping.
- Once its Mirrorgrain Plate is at zero durability it still flips, but can no longer leave a reflection.
Galebreaker Rangers (all three):
- Stay inside 6 m for about 2.5 seconds with its lunge ready and it retreats toward 9 m to seek another lunge. Hugging it does not permanently disable the move.
- When you are 6–28 m away, a lunge line runs along the ground from its feet to just in front of you and a ring (1.8 m radius) lights at the landing spot; once the line is fully lit it dashes in, slams down and then staggers for 1.2 seconds. Sidestep as soon as the line lights.
- Their whole group is no friend of the scavengers and fights them on sight. Lead one over and let them go at each other.
- Chaser (K1): lunges twice, first to just in front of you, then it re-aims at where you are now and lands just behind you for a second slam; sidestep both. Its line stays lit about 0.9 seconds, twice as long once its Galebreaker Mantle is at zero durability.
- Stalker (K2): lunges once, then flicks back to where it started to shoot from the platform edge. Do not chase it into a gunfight at the edge; wait for its next lunge. Below half health its pack comes apart and it stops flicking back.
- Warden (K3): lunges only once and its line stays lit longest (about 1.2 seconds), the easiest of the three to read, so learn the lunge on it first. Its line stays lit twice as long once its Galebreaker Hood is shot through.
